Jonathan Nimmo, Ian’s son, has sent in the following:
“Ian Nimmo was born in Middlesbrough in 1939 and passed away on March 21, 2024, at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family. His life was marked by warmth, generosity, and a deep love for his family.
Ian attended St Bees School from 1953 to 1957 where he was in Foundation North. Whilst there he made lifelong friends, was in touch with many and with whom he met up regularly throughout his life. It was at St Bees that he first developed a passion for the Lake District. He loved cycling to Keswick and the surrounding areas on his free days, and often talked of those adventures in later life. His love of the Lakes was passed on to his sons, Andrew and Jonathan, who both continue to visit the area frequently.
After St Bees Ian studied pharmacy in Sunderland, following in his father’s footsteps. He worked in various pharmacies before opening his own shop in Acklam, serving the community for almost forty years. He was well-loved for his kindness and willingness to help anyone in need. It was at his pharmacy that he met Audrey, who worked as a dispenser. They married and spent over forty happy years together. Ian was a devoted husband and father, proud of his two sons and adored his three grandchildren, Lexie, Mitch, and Tom. He especially enjoyed playing chess with them. A dedicated supporter of Middlesbrough FC, he loved discussing the matches with his sons and later with his grandchildren.

During his time at St Bees, Ian forged enduring bonds that lasted a lifetime. He remained close friends with many of his fellow pupils, cherishing the camaraderie and shared experiences they had cultivated together. Beyond the school walls, he continued to nurture these friendships, attending reunion dinners with unwavering enthusiasm and seizing every opportunity to reconnect with his former classmates. Gatherings with fellow alumni were not just occasions for reminiscence; they were vibrant celebrations of precious memories, enriching Ian's life with the warmth of cherished friendships that stood the test of time.
